MUSCLE JOINT BONE · EPPING

Your first osteopathy appointment

Know what to bring, how assessment works and the questions you can ask before agreeing to treatment.

Before your visit

Choose Epping and Osteopathy in the booking system, or call reception for help. Confirm the appointment type, current fee and expected duration. Mention recent surgery, pregnancy, a funding claim or any access needs when booking.

  • Bring relevant reports, imaging results and referral information you already have.
  • Bring a medication list and details of important health conditions or previous injuries.
  • Wear clothing that allows comfortable movement and access to the relevant area.
  • Think about one or two tasks you would like help returning to.

History and assessment

Your osteopath will ask about your symptoms, medical history and daily activities. With your consent, the examination may include movement, strength and other relevant tests. The findings help determine whether musculoskeletal care is appropriate or whether medical review is needed.

Understanding your options

Ask the clinician to explain the working diagnosis, what remains uncertain, proposed treatment and alternatives. Care may include advice, exercise and hands-on techniques. Discuss likely benefits and risks before agreeing. You can decline any technique, ask for a different approach or stop at any point.

Leaving with a useful plan

You should understand what to do between visits, which changes need medical advice and when progress will be reviewed. The need for further appointments depends on the assessment and your response. There is no standard number of sessions that guarantees recovery.

Common questions

Do I need a referral?

A referral is generally not required for a private osteopathy appointment. Medicare or third-party funding can have specific requirements; see fees, referrals and rebates.

Will I need scans?

Not every musculoskeletal problem needs imaging. Bring existing reports. Your clinician can discuss whether further investigation would be useful based on the assessment.

Can I bring a support person?

Tell reception before your visit if you would like a support person, interpreter or assistance with access so the team can discuss arrangements.

Will treatment happen at the first appointment?

This depends on the assessment, suitability and your consent. Sometimes the priority is further investigation or referral rather than treatment on the day.
