Back pain & lumbar strain

An assessment can help you understand back pain, discuss suitable care and plan a return to everyday movement.

Back pain is a symptom, not one diagnosis

Back pain may follow lifting, a change in activity or an injury, and sometimes starts without an obvious trigger. A lumbar strain describes an injury involving muscles or related soft tissues in the lower back. Pain alone cannot identify the affected structure. Most episodes do not need a scan; the history and examination help determine whether imaging or medical review is appropriate.

What an assessment may involve

Tell your osteopath when the pain began, whether it travels into a leg, and how sitting, bending, sleep and lifting affect it. Assessment may include movement, strength and nerve checks, with your consent. Bring any existing scan reports; you do not need to arrange new imaging before a routine appointment.

Care and rehabilitation

A plan may combine education, gradually increasing comfortable activity, an individual exercise program and hands-on care where appropriate. Prolonged bed rest is usually unhelpful. The amount and type of exercise should reflect your symptoms and ability. For a tradie, the starting goal might be tolerating a shorter shift or lifting a manageable load; for a parent, it may be getting up from the floor.

Are lower-back stretches always helpful?

No single stretch suits every cause of back pain. Describe what happens during and after a movement. Your clinician can adjust range, repetitions or the exercise itself. A useful program should fit your day and have a clear review point.

When to seek medical help

Seek emergency care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals or buttocks, or severe or worsening weakness in both legs. Back pain after a serious accident or with chest pain needs emergency assessment. Call 000 for a medical emergency.
